Counter-terrorism authorities are now taking charge of the investigation into the murder of Ann Widdecombe following the discovery of new information and evidence. The shift occurred as a 28-year-old man was being questioned by the police on suspicion of killing the former Cabinet Minister, with fresh footage emerging of his arrest. Laurence Taylor, the Head of National Counter Terrorism Policing, stated that the investigation has been handed over to Counter Terrorism Policing based on advancements made by Devon and Cornwall Police.
The main suspect, a White British man, has been re-arrested on suspicion of terrorism-related offenses, allowing authorities to detain him for up to 14 days under the Terrorism Act. The re-arrest took place in Rotherham, South Yorkshire, where the suspect resides, located approximately 270 miles away from Ms. Widdecombe’s home in Haytor, Devon, where her body was discovered. The collaboration between Counter Terrorism Policing and local law enforcement has been ongoing since the initiation of the murder inquiry.
The investigation has revealed CCTV footage showing the suspect handling a wooden stick near a red Vauxhall Corsa on the day of the incident. Neighbors described him as a solitary individual who distanced himself from others following his father’s passing in December. The Home Secretary, Shabana Mahmood, emphasized the need to safeguard individuals involved in politics and public service, expressing condolences for Ms. Widdecombe’s lifelong dedication to public life.
