British travelers have been alerted to a food caution following an uptick in cases of a gastrointestinal illness leading to severe diarrhea. Mexico and the US are among the countries where cyclosporiasis outbreaks have been reported.

Cyclosporiasis is an infection caused by a tiny parasite known as Cyclospora. The primary mode of transmission is through consuming contaminated food or water containing the parasite from human feces.

Common symptoms of cyclosporiasis include watery diarrhea and explosive bowel movements, lasting for an extended period. The Travel Health Pro website indicated that a majority of UK cases have been associated with visits to Mexico.

The parasite Cyclospora is prevalent in tropical and subtropical regions, with summer travel abroad being a common link to infections in the UK. Central and South America, South and Southeast Asia are identified regions where Cyclospora has been detected, with Mexico being a frequent destination for UK-related cases.

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported 843 confirmed cases of cyclosporiasis in the US between May 1 and July 9 this year. While no fatalities were recorded, 86 individuals required hospitalization according to the CDC.

Travel Health Pro offered advice on safe eating practices while traveling, emphasizing the risk reduction strategies such as maintaining good food and water hygiene habits, even when staying in upscale accommodations.

If infected with Cyclospora, symptoms typically manifest approximately a week after consuming contaminated food or beverages. While infections are usually mild and self-resolving, they can persist for weeks, especially in individuals with weakened immune systems.

Cyclospora primarily affects the small intestine, causing watery diarrhea and frequent, sometimes explosive bowel movements. For those falling ill abroad, seeking immediate medical attention is advised, while individuals back in the UK with relevant symptoms should promptly consult a GP or contact NHS 111 if they have traveled recently.
