An infamous rogue elephant, known for its deadly attacks, pursued a man and killed four members of his family over a 14-year span, despite their efforts to escape its rampage by moving to a different location.
The elephant, named Dhurbe, resides in Chitwan National Park in Nepal and has become notorious for its aggressive behavior. Between 2009 and 2026, it has been responsible for the deaths of 25 individuals and the destruction of over 50 houses. Due to its dangerous nature, Dhurbe has been classified as a rogue elephant and has been targeted for elimination for more than a decade.
Shanichara Bote, a victim of Dhurbe’s attacks, tragically lost four family members to the serial killer elephant since 2012. Bote recounted his first encounter with Dhurbe in 2012 when his parents were fatally trampled by the elephant in Madi, near the national park. Despite relocating his family to Jagatpur, nearly 20 miles away, Dhurbe managed to track them down and entered their home, resulting in the deaths of his daughter-in-law and grandson.
Expressing his despair, Bote mentioned that they felt helpless after the heartbreaking incident, as they thought moving across rivers would keep them safe. However, the relentless elephant found them again, causing further devastation. Bote emphasized that they had run out of options for escaping the threat.
Apart from Bote’s family tragedy, Dhurbe has claimed the lives of numerous other individuals, with officials confirming a total of 25 fatalities linked to the rogue elephant. Abinash Thapa Magar, a representative from Chitwan National Park, revealed that the elephant had previously caused 23 deaths before the recent incident in Jagatpur, bringing the total number of casualties to 25.
Efforts to monitor Dhurbe’s movements using a satellite tracking collar have been in place, but the device has not prevented the elephant from carrying out additional attacks. The collar provides hourly location updates for tracking purposes.
