UK Staycationers Warned of Phantom Roaming Charges

Millions of British citizens planning a staycation holiday within the UK are at risk of incurring unexpected foreign phone charges, despite not traveling abroad, as cautioned by experts. Research highlights the ease with which individuals can unknowingly connect to a neighboring country’s mobile network, termed as “phantom roaming.”

The concern lies in the fact that individuals who are unaware of this issue, and depending on their network provider, may receive an unforeseen bill even though they have not left the UK. Inadvertent roaming occurs when a mobile phone automatically links to a stronger foreign network instead of a UK network, commonly observed in coastal and border regions.

Notably, the South East of England, particularly areas like Kent’s coast near Dover and Folkestone, where the English Channel narrows, poses a significant risk for such occurrences. This phenomenon, although not new, has prompted a timely warning from price comparison service Uswitch due to the surge in Brits embarking on summer vacations who may be unaware of this potential scenario.

A survey commissioned by Uswitch revealed that three-quarters of respondents were oblivious to the fact that mobile phones can inadvertently connect to foreign networks while still in the UK, or believed it to be impossible. Furthermore, nearly one in ten individuals have experienced their phones connecting to overseas networks, leading to roaming charges or alerts. Extrapolated to the adult UK population of around 54 million, this amounts to over five million people.

Among those surveyed, 13% planned to visit South East England, including the Kent coast, Dover, and Folkestone, while 26% intended to travel to Cornwall, Devon, and the Dorset coast. Phantom roaming also poses a challenge along the Northern Ireland border, where devices can connect to Ireland’s networks, making it one of the highest-risk areas for inadvertent roaming in the UK.

One commuter, Paul Williams from Deal in Kent, shared his firsthand experience, highlighting how his phone often picks up a French mobile signal during his daily train commute along the White Cliffs, despite remaining in the UK. Williams emphasized the importance of keeping roaming disabled to avoid unexpected charges, underscoring how easily one could unknowingly incur costly roaming fees without leaving the country.

According to Uswitch, the risk of facing unforeseen charges depends on the mobile network provider. BT/EE and Vodafone/Three are the only UK networks that do not offer EU roaming as a standard feature, potentially subjecting customers to daily charges if their devices latch onto foreign signals near coastal or border areas. Conversely, major providers like O2, Sky Mobile, Tesco Mobile, and others include EU roaming in their plans, mitigating the risk of additional charges due to inadvertent roaming.

Uswitch’s mobiles expert, Simrat Sharma, emphasized that individuals do not need to travel abroad to encounter roaming charges, especially with numerous Brits visiting coastal and border regions this summer. Sharma advised turning off automatic network selection and manually choosing the UK network before venturing into such areas to prevent unexpected charges. Additionally, setting a spend cap or blocking data roaming through the provider’s app is recommended as a precautionary measure.

In the event of incurring roaming charges, Sharma advised individuals to promptly contact their provider, as some may waive the fees, although it is not guaranteed. Taking proactive steps before traveling, such as disabling roaming and setting spend limits, can help avoid unpleasant surprises.
