The family of a teenager who tragically passed away after entering the River Wye during a Duke of Edinburgh journey has expressed their heartfelt tribute to the young man, describing his loss as creating an immense void in their lives. Umar Dumbuya, hailing from London, lost his life while participating in a DofE expedition in Glasbury, Powys, on June 30.

In a statement conveyed through Dyfed-Powys Police, his family shared, “We are devastated by the departure of our son, brother, and grandson. The pain we are enduring as a family is indescribable. Umar was a compassionate individual who will be deeply missed by all who knew him.”

The family reminisced about Umar’s passion for playing basketball, hitting the gym, and cherishing moments with loved ones, highlighting his kindness, warmth, and humor. They requested privacy to mourn as they cope with the profound loss in their family.

Following reports of the 18-year-old entering the River Wye and going missing, emergency services, including Dyfed-Powys Police, Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service, and mountain rescue teams, initiated a search operation until Umar’s body was recovered.

A representative from the Duke of Edinburgh expressed sorrow over the tragic drowning incident during the expedition in Powys, Wales, extending condolences to the bereaved family and all involved in the activity. The organization pledged full support and collaboration with relevant authorities to comprehend the circumstances surrounding the tragic event.
