Nigel Farage has strongly criticized a reporter and issued a warning of “serious repercussions” amid mounting pressure regarding allegations that he did not disclose financial benefits received from a convicted criminal.

The leader of Reform UK faces accusations of violating parliamentary regulations by allegedly accepting support in staff, security, and accommodation from George Cottrell, a wealthy aristocrat known as “Posh George,” in the year preceding his tenure as an MP.

During an encounter with Sky News at Heathrow Airport upon returning from American Independence Day festivities, Mr. Farage became agitated and verbally attacked the journalist when questioned about the allegations. He cautioned the reporter about potential consequences if the harassment of his family continued.

Mr. Farage paused his departure as the reporter inquired again whether it was an oversight not to declare the gifts. He responded sharply, highlighting the reporter’s alleged disregard for rules and abruptly ended the interaction.

The Reform leader is currently under investigation by Parliament’s standards commissioner for an undisclosed £5 million gift from Christopher Harborne, a billionaire based in Thailand. Additionally, he has been referred to the commissioner again over allegations of failing to report financial benefits from a convicted criminal.

Under regulations effective at the time of Mr. Farage’s election in 2024, new MPs were mandated to register gifts exceeding £300 received in the previous 12 months, except when such gifts were not reasonably related to their political activities.

If found to have breached the rules, potential sanctions could include a suspension from the Commons, triggering a recall petition and a by-election in his constituency.

The Labour Party has urged the Electoral Commission to investigate the donations, questioning the eligibility of the support given Mr. Farage’s role in Reform even before reentering frontline politics. They also raised concerns about whether Cottrell, based in Montenegro, was a permissible donor given uncertainties about his status on the UK electoral register at the time.

Anna Turley MP, Chair of the Labour Party, emphasized the need for transparency from Mr. Farage to address the escalating scandal and potential legal implications. She urged him to disclose all relevant evidence to clear his name and regain public trust.

A spokesperson for Reform clarified that George Cottrell, identified as an unpaid volunteer without an official role at Reform UK, provided a business card to facilitate communication with Nigel Farage’s office, not implying any formal position or authority within the party.
