Smartphone users in the UK are being cautioned to remain alert for a new concerning text message circulating on their devices. The latest wave of deceptive messages is a resurgence of the notorious “Hi Mum” scam, which has already led to significant financial losses for victims.

The scam typically starts with a seemingly innocent text purportedly from a family member using a different phone number, capitalizing on the current summer season to appear timely and relevant. An example message might say, “Hi Mum, I’m feeling overheated and stressed. Please contact me on my updated number – it’s urgent.”

Once the recipient engages by responding, the scammer masquerades as a distressed relative in need and eventually solicits money, often under the guise of an emergency situation. These scams are effective as they exploit parents’ natural inclination to assist their children, creating a sense of urgency and prompting quick action without questioning the authenticity of the request.

To combat such scams, individuals are advised not to reply to suspicious messages but to reach out to their loved ones using established phone numbers to verify their safety. Any dubious texts should be promptly reported to 7726, the UK’s spam reporting service, to safeguard others from falling prey to similar schemes.

While the scam may appear obvious in hindsight, its emotional manipulation has ensnared numerous victims, especially those who may be less technologically savvy. The messages craft convincing narratives that coerce victims into sending money without validating the legitimacy of the situation.

The financial impact of these scams is substantial, with Action Fraud revealing that over £220,000 was lost to “Hi Mum” scams in the UK between 2023 and 2025. It is advisable to approach unexpected messages purporting to be from family members with caution, verifying their identity through trusted means before taking any action.
