New government plans could result in fines or potential prison sentences for political parties and politicians who accept donations from questionable companies, aiming to tackle financial interference in British politics.

Proposed laws will limit company donations based on their profits to curb unfair financial influence in the political landscape.

Previously, the Representation of the People Bill was introduced to prevent illicit funds from entering political parties. However, following the Rycroft review on foreign financial meddling in UK democracy, restrictions will now be tied to a company’s profit margin.

The Rycroft review, formulated by former permanent secretary Philip Rycroft, recommended a halt on cryptocurrency donations and a cap on contributions from British citizens residing abroad. It emphasized that limiting donations based on profit would be a more effective deterrent against foreign interference.

Under the new regulations, companies must demonstrate sufficient profits to cover their donations and will face restrictions on the frequency of donations within a specified timeframe.

Failure by a political party to verify compliance with the new donation rules could lead to penalties of up to £20,000 by the Electoral Commission, with severe violations potentially resulting in up to seven years of imprisonment.

An MHCLG spokesperson stressed the necessity of safeguarding democracy from external threats in the current political climate.

The new restrictions on company donations aim to ensure that only legitimate UK enterprises supporting society can contribute, preventing illicit funds from infiltrating the democratic process.

Recent reports revealed that Reform received £18.6 million in donations last year, with a significant portion originating from offshore sources, highlighting concerns over financial transparency. This amount far exceeded donations received by other major parties.
