Andy Burnham is set to transform the prevailing “boys club” environment of factional briefings at Downing Street, according to Lucy Powell.
The Deputy Leader of the Labour Party disclosed her encounters with “unpleasant” briefings at Number 10, fostering a culture of silence and fear among individuals. Powell expressed concerns to the Guardian, highlighting the detrimental impact of briefings targeting female Cabinet members, indicating a male-dominated culture within the government’s top echelons.
Addressing the issue, Powell emphasized the need to eradicate the culture of fear that stifles dissenting opinions and promotes factionalism over meritocracy. She underscored the prevalence of malicious briefings against female colleagues and the biased appointments based on personal affiliations rather than competence.
Andy Burnham recently pledged to dismiss any staff members found engaging in negative briefings or undermining women within his team. The Makerfield MP unequivocally stated that such behavior would not be tolerated, asserting a commitment to upholding respect and equality within his team.
In response to inquiries about potential changes in the culture at No 10 under Burnham’s leadership, Powell expressed optimism, emphasizing the collective effort required to foster diversity of perspectives and ensure strong female representation within the party.
Pressure mounts on Burnham to appoint a significant number of female cabinet ministers if he assumes the role of Prime Minister. Female Labour MPs urged Burnham to adopt a gender-balanced approach, aiming for a 50/50 split among ministers and staff to promote gender equality and inclusivity.
