England’s upcoming World Cup match has been rescheduled due to the threat of thunderstorms in Mexico City. Originally set to begin at 1am UK time on Monday, the game will now kick off at 7pm UK time on Sunday night following a decision by FIFA. Weather forecasts indicated the likelihood of heavy rain and lightning strikes around the initial match start time.

The forecast predicted nearly 5mm of rainfall at the Banorte Stadium, also known as the Azteca, with a significant storm system moving across the Mexican capital. Safety regulations mandate a 30-minute delay in play for any lightning detected within an eight-mile radius of the stadium.

Similar weather disruptions were experienced during the tournament when France’s match against Iraq was delayed for over two hours in Philadelphia. FIFA has the authority to adjust schedules or relocate matches for safety reasons.

England’s forward Marcus Rashford acknowledged the change, stating the team remains prepared for any challenges. The last-minute rescheduling coincided with an announcement by Keir Starmer allowing pubs in England and Wales to extend operating hours until 5am for fans watching overnight World Cup games. This adjustment eliminated the need for special late licenses as the match in Mexico City was expected to end past 3am UK time.
