Former President Donald Trump is said to be extremely upset after observing the meager turnout at his Great American State Fair, as per a recent report. The fair, organized to commemorate America’s 250th birthday, has been ongoing for weeks on the National Mall. However, the underwhelming attendance has raised concerns among White House officials about the potential sparse crowds for Trump’s upcoming Fourth of July speech.
The event was arranged by Freedom 250, a public-private partnership initiated by Trump, despite a pre-existing bipartisan commission set up by Congress to oversee the nation’s birthday festivities. Following the withdrawal of several musical acts from the opening performance on June 24, Trump decided to take the center stage, delivering a 30-minute impromptu speech to the audience, which mainly comprised administration officials and his supporters.
Trump, unaware of the actual size of the crowd during his post-sunset address, reportedly became enraged upon seeing aerial photos revealing large empty spaces beyond the initial rows of attendees. This led to the removal of such images from the White House’s social media posts. Despite Trump’s claims of a packed crowd of “at least 45,000 people” on Truth Social, NBC News estimated a significantly lower turnout.
An unnamed source close to the White House criticized the lack of effort in driving attendance, attributing the low turnout to a flawed “if you build it, they will come” approach. Concerns have been raised by sources close to the president regarding a potential repeat of the situation at Trump’s upcoming July 4 celebration on the National Mall, advertised as a grand birthday party featuring a “TRUMP RALLY,” fireworks, flyovers, and military band performances.
Unlike previous years, attendees will not be allowed to bring coolers to the Mall due to anticipated high temperatures. The late-night schedule of the event has sparked criticism from a White House official who questioned the timing of the celebration. In an attempt to avoid disappointing Trump, ticketing the viewing section nearest the stage has been proposed to ensure a sizable crowd, although the availability of free tickets might lead to no-shows.
White House spokesman Davis Ingle emphasized Trump’s commitment to providing a remarkable 250th birthday celebration for America through Freedom 250, aiming to revive patriotism and national pride under the president’s leadership. The Mirror has reached out to the White House for a comment.
