Over 50 members of the European Parliament are supporting an ethics complaint against FIFA President Gianni Infantino. The complaint, initially lodged by London-based non-governmental organization FairSquare, challenges Infantino’s decision to award the inaugural FIFA Peace Prize to US President Donald Trump.
The Norwegian Football Federation has joined the coalition against Infantino, highlighting concerns over his impartiality. MEP Barry Andrews from Ireland emphasized the need for FIFA to maintain its integrity and global unity, especially during events like the World Cup.
Infantino faced backlash for presenting the FIFA Peace Prize to Trump, with critics accusing him of violating FIFA’s Ethics Code by showing political bias. Andrews urged the FIFA Ethics Committee to investigate the matter thoroughly to uphold fairness and transparency.
Amidst criticisms, Infantino has also been under scrutiny for excessive travel during the World Cup matches, contradicting his pledge to reduce carbon emissions. Despite FIFA’s commitment to sustainability, concerns were raised about the environmental impact of Infantino’s frequent flights between tournament venues.
The controversy surrounding Infantino’s actions has prompted calls for accountability and adherence to ethical standards within FIFA, raising questions about the organization’s commitment to neutrality and environmental responsibility.
