A grandmother, Gill Thompson, reunited with her long-lost brother, Michael Bardsley, after 73 years apart by connecting through LinkedIn. Gill, 73, had no knowledge of her father, Colin Bardsley, until receiving a Christmas card from her paternal grandfather at 25 years old. She later discovered that her father had moved to Cape Town, South Africa, remarried, and had a son named Michael Bardsley. Despite unsuccessful searches in the late 90s, Gill’s interest was reignited when she encountered someone with the same name at a bowls tournament in August. With the help of her daughter Sammy, 31, Gill located Michael on LinkedIn, recognizing him as her half-brother through their shared family resemblance.

Their emotional first meeting took place at Colwyn Bay railway station in north Wales on June 8. Gill, a retired PE teacher from Llandudno, shared her joy at the long-awaited reunion, while Michael, a sports film producer from Cape Town, expressed his overwhelming emotions at finally connecting with his closest living relative. Gill’s parents, Joyce Priestley, and Colin Bardsley, married in 1952 before separating, leaving Gill unaware of her father’s existence until later in life.

Years of searching and unexpected encounters led to Gill and Michael’s heartwarming reunion, facilitated by modern technology and family determination. The siblings, along with their extended family, now regularly communicate through texts and video calls, cherishing the newfound bond made possible by the Internet.
