A mother who tragically lost her 15-year-old son in a river drowning incident is emphasizing the importance of having a crucial conversation with children about water safety. Thandolwethu Ndlovu, fondly known as Thando by loved ones, passed away almost five years ago in the River Trent. Nombulelo Ndlovu, his mother, recalls him as a kind-hearted and charming teenager who brought joy to everyone around him.

Nombulelo, a supporter of the ‘Save Lives for Sam water safety campaign by the Mirror,’ described Thando as someone who uplifted spirits and inspired those he interacted with. Reflecting on their lack of knowledge about water safety, Nombulelo confessed to never discussing the risks of open water with her son. She now realizes the importance of such conversations, as many parents may share her previous lack of awareness.

Statistics from the National Child Mortality Database revealed that Black or Black British children face a three times higher risk of drowning compared to White children. Additionally, research from the Black Swimming Association indicated that nearly half of Black and Brown individuals surveyed lacked knowledge on water safety practices.

Nombulelo is urging parents, especially those with Black boys, to educate their children on water safety. She believes that these conversations are often overlooked in Black households and should be prioritized to prevent further tragedies. Recounting the incident where Thando drowned, Nombulelo regrets not encouraging him to continue swimming lessons, emphasizing the importance of building safety skills and confidence in open water.

In her advocacy efforts, Nombulelo is calling for governmental action to incorporate open water safety education into school curriculums. She stresses the need for proactive measures to prevent avoidable water-related fatalities during summers and heatwaves. Nombulelo encourages parents to engage in discussions about open water dangers with their children and support them in acquiring essential swimming skills.

Since her son’s passing, Nombulelo has been actively raising awareness about water safety. She collaborated with Derbyshire Fire & Rescue Service to share her family’s story and released a video in 2024 recounting Thando’s tragedy. Despite the pain, she hopes that sharing their experience will prevent future incidents and honor Thando’s memory as a beloved legend.
