While Britons are facing intense heat, parts of Europe are experiencing temperatures nearly 10C higher. France and Spain have been severely impacted by the recent heatwave, resulting in numerous deaths. France recorded its highest-ever temperature, and Spain saw its hottest daily average since 1950 due to a heat dome covering the region.

Record-breaking temperatures have led to significant consequences across Europe, with Spain reporting 213 deaths between Monday and Wednesday. In France, more than 50 fatalities occurred on the hottest day in almost 80 years, primarily from drowning incidents amid the scorching 44C weather.

Italy also faced casualties, with four deaths on Wednesday and 17 cities under the highest-level heat alert. Germany reported a drowning incident, with one person confirmed dead and three missing after swimming in the Rhine River.

Paris Mayor Emmanuel Gregoire highlighted the spike in mortality rates due to the extreme temperatures, emphasizing the need for protection, especially for individuals aged between 50 and 70.

The Met Office extended the UK’s red extreme heat warning, with temperatures expected to reach up to 38C in southern England. The ongoing hot and humid weather is anticipated to persist, posing risks to the population.

A shift in the highest temperatures towards east and southeastern England is expected on Friday, potentially exceeding 36 Celsius and reaching 38 Celsius in some areas. The public is advised to take precautions and adapt routines to cope with the rare heat levels in the UK.

As the red warning ends in certain areas, an amber warning for extreme heat will come into effect on Saturday, affecting 31 regions. The World Health Organisation’s Europe office reported over 200,000 heat-related deaths in the last four years across Europe, stressing the preventable nature of most fatalities.
