An Italian visitor passed away, and nearly 1,700 vacationers were evacuated following a significant blaze that ravaged a high-end retreat in the Dominican Republic. The fire erupted at the Viva Dominicus Beach by Wyndham in Bayahibe on Friday. Situated on the Caribbean nation’s southeastern shoreline, the resort is a sought-after spot for American and international travelers.

Authorities reported the death of Francesca Valentino, 46, in the fire, with approximately 1,690 guests having to relocate to alternative lodgings and nearby accommodations due to the extensive inferno. The Dominican Republic’s Emergency Operations Centre noted that the fire had rapidly expanded due to wind conditions and the presence of thatch roofing on part of the resort. The situation has since been brought under control.

The adjacent Viva Wyndham’s Dominicus Palace remained unscathed and operational, as confirmed by the center. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
