Andy Burnham is set to meet with Keir Starmer in Westminster on Monday for crucial discussions regarding Starmer’s leadership position. The Makerfield MP, who is soon to be sworn in as an MP, intends to request a clear timeline from the Prime Minister regarding his exit plans.
Despite Starmer’s firm stance against any leadership challenge, the significant victory of Burnham in the Makerfield by-election has led to increased pressure from Labour members and officials for the Prime Minister to step down. Several MPs who previously opposed a leadership election have now changed their minds, with former home secretary Alan Johnson urging Starmer to step aside.
Calls to remove the Prime Minister emphasize the necessity of a timely departure to prevent prolonged internal strife within the party. A source within Labour highlighted the importance of a smooth transition, indicating that both Burnham and another figure are allowing the Prime Minister space to make the right decision for the party’s future.
Another Labour source criticized those urging Starmer to resist, suggesting that they are driven by factional motives rather than genuine concern for Starmer’s well-being. The debate over Starmer’s leadership coincides with preparations for the Greater Manchester mayoral by-election triggered by Burnham’s election, scheduled for July 30, with Labour expected to announce its candidate on June 26.
Ayesha Hazarika, a broadcaster and Labour peer, pointed out that the Prime Minister’s legacy could be positively shaped if he gracefully steps down, allowing the party to move forward effectively. Stressing the need to focus on upcoming electoral challenges, including the Manchester mayoralty contest, Starmer’s supporters emphasized the importance of maintaining party unity during this period of transition.
