A former inmate has issued a strong warning that the perpetrator of the tragic death of Preston Davey will face severe consequences in prison due to being considered the most undesirable type of prisoner.

Jamie Varley, a 37-year-old high school teacher, was recently convicted of murdering and sexually assaulting the 13-month-old child he had adopted with his partner, John McGowan-Fazakerley, aged 32. Varley’s reaction to the guilty verdict was one of shock and distress, culminating in physical illness.

Preston passed away at Blackpool Victoria Hospital in July 2023 after enduring a total of 40 traumatic injuries, both external and internal, during the four months he spent under the care of the couple at their residence in Blackpool.

In addition to the murder charge, Varley was found guilty of several other serious offenses, including sexual assault, child cruelty, and the production and distribution of indecent images of a child. McGowan-Fazakerley was also convicted on charges related to the child’s death and abuse.

As the two defendants await sentencing by Mr. Justice Turner, a former British Army veteran and ex-convict, Rich Jones, shared insights on the potential dangers Varley may face behind bars. Jones emphasized that Varley’s crimes would make him a target for violence in prison, especially considering the notorious nature of his offenses.

Jones speculated that Varley could be placed in a high-security Category A prison like HMP Wakefield, known as “Monster Mansion” due to its population of violent offenders. Despite any protective measures, Jones stressed that Varley would remain at risk due to the severity of his crimes, attracting unwanted attention from other prisoners seeking to harm him.

Following the court’s decision, Karen Tonge of the Crown Prosecution Service described the case as one of the most appalling and distressing she had encountered. She condemned Varley and McGowan-Fazakerley for betraying their duty to protect baby Preston, emphasizing the abhorrent nature of their actions and the lasting impact on those affected by the tragedy.
