Politicians convened in Westminster yesterday to urge the government to take action on water safety in anticipation of the upcoming school holidays.

This call to action followed the tragic loss of 13 children and six adults to drowning during the recent heatwave. Among those present was Lee Pitcher, MP for Doncaster East and Isle of Axholme, who has been actively advocating for water safety measures to protect young individuals.

Pitcher emphasized the urgent need for government intervention, stating, “The government has the responsibility to intervene and implement measures to save lives. With the approaching hot summer and increased alcohol consumption due to the World Cup, I urge the government to launch a national campaign to alert people about the dangers of unsupervised water activities.”

Pitcher, leading the Private Members’ Bill Sam’s Law on water safety, joined other MPs, athletes, campaigners, and grieving families in supporting the Mirror’s Save Lives for Sam initiative. The collective effort aims to encourage the government to launch an educational campaign before the six-week school summer holiday to educate youth on water safety practices.

The push for greater awareness stems from the tragic passing of Sam Haycock, 16, in May 2021, following an incident in a reservoir on the last day of school. Simon Haycock, Sam’s father, highlighted the misconception among young individuals regarding swimming in open water, emphasizing the hazards of cold water shock, hidden debris, and underwater vegetation.

The event also saw Vanessa Abbess sharing her son Joe’s tragic demise at Bournemouth beach due to a rip current in 2023, underscoring the unpredictability of such water hazards.

Jim Dickson, MP for Dartford, highlighted the recent drowning of a constituent in a flooded quarry pit during the hot spell, emphasizing the critical need for water safety education in schools and broader society.

The Royal Life Saving Society UK, which organized the gathering, stressed the importance of immediate government action to prevent drownings, especially with Drowning Prevention Week approaching. Collaboration with various organizations, MPs, and affected families aims to drive effective public messaging to safeguard individuals during water-related activities.

Key stakeholders, including the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents, the Black Swimming Association, The National Water Safety Forum, the RNLI, Swim England, and The Swimming Alliance, have united with MPs and bereaved families to advocate for enhanced water safety measures. Olympic icons Becky Adlington and Tom Dean, along with elite swimmer Michael Gunnin, have lent their support to the cause.

Collectively, the coalition calls for:

– Enhanced water safety education
– Increased public awareness campaigns
– Swift government action to prevent drownings

This collaborative effort underscores the critical importance of prioritizing water safety to prevent further tragedies.
