A man is accused of causing the death of his four-week-old son by shaking him violently following the consumption of nine pints of beer. Atticus Bartlett passed away in a hospital after collapsing at his family residence in Chard, Somerset, on July 16, 2022. Tony Bartlett, aged 39, refutes allegations of murder and manslaughter in connection to his son’s fatal brain injuries.
During the court proceedings, Atticus’ mother, Evelyn Ballentyne, recounted how she was horrified to find her son unresponsive and pale. She described the moment when she heard Atticus gasping for breath after the alleged incident involving Bartlett, who is employed as a postman.
Ms. Ballentyne vividly recalled how she observed Atticus lying motionless on Bartlett’s lap, and the distressing scene that followed when Bartlett turned him over. She emphasized the lifelessness of Atticus as she tried to revive him before realizing he had passed away, prompting her to seek help.
In defense of Bartlett, Nigel Power KC questioned Ms. Ballentyne’s actions, insinuating that she downplayed her involvement in the incident. However, Ms. Ballentyne adamantly affirmed that Bartlett had indeed harmed Atticus. The court also heard that Atticus had been under the care of his grandparents prior to the tragic event, while Bartlett and Ms. Ballentyne were out for the evening.
Allegedly, Bartlett, under the influence of alcohol, shook Atticus forcefully, leading to severe injuries to the infant’s brain and spinal cord, as well as multiple rib fractures. Despite medical intervention, Atticus remained unconscious and dependent on life support until his passing on July 23, 2022.
Bartlett, residing in Axminster, Devon, maintains his innocence regarding the charges brought against him as the trial progresses.
