The UK has pledged support to Ukrainian families affected by Russian attacks on critical power infrastructure through a significant two-year energy agreement. Keir Starmer, the UK’s Prime Minister, revealed plans to supply electricity to Ukraine’s nuclear plants for the next two years, emphasizing the commitment to assist the war-torn nation in facing upcoming challenges.

During the G7 summit in Evian, France, Mr. Starmer introduced a £210 million support initiative aimed at urging global leaders to enhance efforts in ensuring peace for Ukraine. Additionally, Downing Street is set to unveil a new sanctions package targeting Russia’s clandestine fleet, including vessels involved in moving Russian Liquid Natural Gas.

In a groundbreaking operation, British forces intercepted a sanctioned Russian shadow fleet oil tanker, the Smyrtos vessel, in the English Channel. This “ghost fleet,” responsible for transporting 75% of Russia’s sanctioned oil, poses environmental and security risks, including threats to undersea cables.

Furthermore, Mr. Starmer aims to address defense concerns at the G7 summit following the resignation of Defense Secretary John Healey due to inadequate military funding. The UK government emphasized the importance of learning from the Ukrainian situation in shaping the long-awaited Defense Investment Plan.

The energy agreement, finalized after discussions between the UK PM and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, will allocate £210 million to UK-based supplier Urenco for providing enriched uranium to Ukraine’s Energoatom, a major electricity provider in the country. The UK’s support signifies a commitment to stand by Ukraine and undermine Putin’s aggressive actions while advocating for a peaceful resolution to the conflict.
