Jamie Varley, who has been sentenced to life in prison for the murder of 13-month-old Preston Davey, is linked to a past infamous crime involving the torture and killing of a 71-year-old woman named Lily Lilley. Varley’s accomplice, Sarah, who was only 14 at the time, participated in the brutal attack on Lily. The duo befriended Lily, subjected her to cruel acts, and ultimately disposed of her body in a canal.

Following the murder, they took over Lily’s residence, misusing her phone and pension funds. Sarah faced legal consequences for her involvement in the crime back in 1999. Preston’s grandmother, Debra Davey, expressed deep sorrow over her grandson’s tragic death, emphasizing that the focus should be on Preston rather than Sarah’s past actions.

Debra revealed the initial plan for her to care for Preston was disrupted due to her cancer diagnosis, leading to his placement with foster parents. She shared her anguish upon learning of Preston’s demise and criticized the delayed arrest of Varley and McGowan-Fazakerley. Debra expressed disbelief at the defendants’ actions and raised concerns about the system’s failure to protect Preston.

Despite Varley’s recent guilty verdict, Debra remains haunted by the suffering Preston endured. She called for accountability from social services and other involved parties. The parole board’s decision to release Sarah, despite repeated breaches, has sparked further outrage and questions about the handling of the case.

The tragic nature of Preston’s death has prompted an independent review of child safeguarding practices, with authorities expressing condolences to Preston’s family. The Crown Prosecution Service termed the case as one of the most distressing they have encountered, highlighting the heinous abuse inflicted on Preston by those entrusted to care for him.
