Two individuals have been convicted of planning arson attacks on buildings and a vehicle associated with the Prime Minister. Roman Lavrynovych, a 22-year-old citizen of Ukraine, and Stanislav Carpiuc, a 27-year-old Ukrainian-born Romanian, were found guilty at the Old Bailey for conspiring to commit arson on properties connected to Sir Keir Starmer.

In a span of five days in May last year, incidents involving fires occurred at a residence in north London linked to Starmer, another property nearby owned by Starmer and leased to his sister-in-law, and a Toyota previously owned by him. These attacks were carried out during the night, endangering the lives of residents and causing fear among them.

Lavrynovych was convicted of committing arson with intent to endanger life and of reckless arson in relation to one of the house fires. Charges regarding another property were dismissed. The prosecution revealed that Lavrynovych executed the arson attacks after being recruited online by a Russian-speaking individual named “El Money” who promised payment.

A third individual, Petro Pochynok, a 35-year-old Ukrainian, was cleared of conspiracy to commit arson. Following the convictions, Commander Helen Flanagan, head of Counter Terrorism Policing (CTP) London, stated that there was no evidence to suggest that El Money posed a state threat. However, the purpose behind the attacks was to instill fear and disruption in the UK community and create anxiety for the Prime Minister.

Flanagan emphasized that the defendants acted as criminal agents for El Money and cautioned against the lure of “easy cash.” She warned that individuals involved in attacks within the UK would be swiftly investigated, brought to justice, and likely face significant prison sentences.
