Keir Starmer is in a rush to secure additional funding for military expenses following the resignation of two defence ministers last week.

Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy disclosed that government departments are exploring further budget reductions to support defense funding. The Prime Minister is set to attend the G7 Summit in France on Monday, where he will engage in challenging discussions with global leaders, including Donald Trump, amidst the unraveling of his defense plans.

John Healey stepped down as Defence Secretary on Thursday, with Armed Forces minister Al Carns resigning shortly after. Two ministerial aides in the department also resigned.

Nandy stated that the new Defence Secretary, Dan Jarvis, a former Army veteran with service in various conflict zones, took on the role believing they could address the current challenges. She emphasized the collaborative efforts to achieve this goal, noting the difficulty in balancing priorities, which the previous government struggled with.

Regarding the unpublished Defense Investment Plan, Nandy hinted at ongoing discussions to increase the financial support for defense. She emphasized the government’s commitment to reallocating resources from other departments to prioritize defense needs in response to changing global threats.

Nandy contradicted Healey’s assertion that the Prime Minister failed to allocate sufficient funds for national defense amid increasing risks. Healey had criticized the Defense Investment Plan for falling short of necessary defense funding, expressing concerns about the government’s financial commitment.

In his first post-promotion interview, Jarvis expressed his determination to ensure successful implementation of the Defense Investment Plan, emphasizing the government’s responsibility to meet defense challenges.

Andy Burnham, potential replacement for Keir Starmer in an upcoming by-election, suggested considering reductions in welfare spending to bolster defense funding, acknowledging the evolving global security landscape.

During the G7 summit, Starmer will engage in discussions on various global issues, including conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East, strategies for the Strait of Hormuz, sanctions against Russia, and military support for Ukraine.

A Downing Street spokesperson highlighted the heightened global insecurity, emphasizing the need to address multiple challenges, including technological advancements and global disorder.

In a meeting with the Japanese counterpart, Starmer underscored the importance of shared values and collaboration amid a volatile global environment.
