Emma Raducanu faced defeat against Donna Vekic in the HSBC Championships final at Queens, despite an impressive effort in the second set. Raducanu aimed for a significant victory in front of her home audience but encountered a challenging start as Vekic dominated the first set with a 6-0 win. The following set was more closely contested, but Vekic ultimately secured it in a tiebreak.

Ranked 42nd globally, Raducanu, the top British player, has not clinched a title since her remarkable triumph at the US Open in 2021. Vekic, the champion, advanced to the final by defeating another British player, Katie Boulter, in the semi-finals.

Raducanu had a flawless journey to the final, not dropping a set while overcoming opponents such as Iva Jovic, Kamilla Rakhimova, and Sorana Cirstea. Despite the loss, Raducanu remained positive, showcasing her skill in the second set as she gears up for Wimbledon in a few weeks.

Expressing gratitude for the support received, Raducanu stated, “It’s been an incredible week for me, making the final here, playing in my home city, in my home tournament.” She acknowledged the tough match against Vekic and thanked her supporters for helping her through challenging moments.

After claiming the first set with six consecutive games, Vekic admitted to anticipating a strong response from Raducanu. She praised the venue and court, highlighting her enjoyment during the tournament. Vekic acknowledged Raducanu’s exceptional play in the second set and emphasized her focus on staying competitive throughout the match.

Raducanu’s notable performances include reaching the fourth round at Wimbledon twice, following her remarkable achievement in New York. Despite a defeat to World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka last year, Raducanu continues to demonstrate her talent on the tennis court.
