A tragic incident occurred when a pregnant woman lost her unborn child in a car accident during a police pursuit. The woman, in her twenties, was a passenger in a vehicle driven by the baby’s father, also in his twenties, when a car evading police crashed into them on Lewisham Way late on Saturday, June 13.
The police chase was initiated after officers noticed counterfeit license plates on the suspect vehicle and attempted to stop it. The expectant mother was rushed to the hospital by emergency services, but unfortunately, the baby did not survive. While the woman is receiving medical care, her injuries are not life-threatening, and the driver of their car escaped unharmed.
The driver of the fleeing vehicle, a 29-year-old man, was apprehended on charges including causing death and serious injury by dangerous driving, theft of a motor vehicle, failure to stop, and possession of illegal substances. He too sustained injuries in the collision but is in stable condition, according to the authorities.
An investigation is underway, and the crime scene has been cleared. The Independent Office for Police Conduct is involved due to the circumstances surrounding the baby’s death in connection with the police pursuit.
Detective Inspector Suzanne Quinton of the Serious Collision Investigation Unit expressed condolences to the affected family and urged anyone with relevant information or footage to cooperate with the ongoing investigation. Individuals willing to assist the police can contact 101 and reference CAD 8670/13JUN.
