A woman was fired from her job at a One Stop Shop in Bootle, Merseyside, after attempting to stop a thief who stole bacon. Eileen Fox, a 56-year-old employee who had been with the company since September 2022, was let go on May 12 for engaging a “regular” offender who had previously jumped over the store’s counter. The management’s investigation concluded that her actions had endangered the business.

Fox expressed disappointment over the decision, stating that she had acted on instinct during the incident on April 27. She clarified that she had never engaged in such behavior before, both at work and in her personal life. Despite being advised by a union representative to issue a final warning, the company believed she posed a potential risk of repeating similar actions.

In response to the incident, a Mirror poll revealed that 98% of readers disagreed with retail workers losing their jobs for intervening in criminal activities. Fox, in an interview with the BBC, shared her perspective, emphasizing that she would not have repeated her actions. The dismissal letter from One Stop highlighted concerns about her reaction during the theft incident and the potential risks it posed to herself and others.

One Stop emphasized its commitment to the safety of customers and employees, stating that the stores should be secure environments for work and shopping. The company stressed the importance of not compromising personal safety and provided training to handle such situations effectively. Continuous security enhancements and collaboration with law enforcement were also mentioned as part of their efforts to prevent incidents in their stores.
