An injection of £132.5 million has been allocated to enhance after-school clubs in anticipation of an upcoming social media restriction for individuals below 16 years old.

This funding will support various activities aimed at engaging children and assisting them in acquiring new skills. Potential activities include music ensembles, engineering workshops, debating groups, and soccer teams.

According to the Department for Education, the enrichment programs offered by schools will be evaluated by Ofsted as part of the assessment on personal development.

Government officials anticipate that this financial boost will directly address the findings of the State of the Nation survey, which highlighted significant levels of isolation among today’s digitally connected youth.

This initiative coincides with the expected implementation of restrictions on social media use by children, a measure likely to be introduced by the Prime Minister in the near future.

A recent consultation conducted by the Government, which concluded on May 26, garnered approximately 120,000 responses, with 90% of parents expressing support for the proposed restrictions.

Education Secretary Bridget Philipson emphasized the importance of providing all children with access to sports and creative arts opportunities, not just a privileged few.

Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy highlighted the necessity of investing in transformative experiences to ensure that every child, regardless of background, can excel in the arts.

By supporting these life-changing opportunities, the government aims to pave the way for children and young people to access creative avenues that could potentially shape their future careers.
