Keir Starmer faced another setback as his Armed Forces minister resigned shortly after the Defense Secretary’s departure. Al Carns, a former Royal Marine, stepped down, criticizing the insufficient defense funding and the deteriorating government operations, particularly the delays in the Defense Investment Plan (DIP).

This resignation followed the unexpected exit of Defense Secretary John Healey, causing turmoil at the Ministry of Defense. Ministerial aides Pamela Nash and Rachel Hopkins also left their positions. In his resignation letter to the Prime Minister, Carns emphasized the need for adequate resources for soldiers and criticized the government’s inefficiencies in decision-making and interdepartmental conflicts.

Carns, with a distinguished 24-year military career, including four tours in Afghanistan and receiving the Military Cross in 2011, expressed his inability to defend inadequate defense investment levels. His departure coincided with Nash’s resignation, who highlighted the government’s failure to take bold actions when necessary.

Healey, in his resignation letter earlier, accused the Prime Minister of not challenging the Treasury’s reluctance to allocate sufficient defense funds. The ongoing dispute over funding for the delayed DIP further intensified the situation. This critical development requires the appointment of a new Defense Secretary just before important international summits.

Keir Starmer pledged to increase defense spending significantly, countering criticisms of the government’s commitment to defense. He assured an enhanced defense budget with sustainable increases, emphasizing the importance of strong public finances for national security.
