Two children have lost their lives in measles outbreaks this year, as health authorities confirm the continued spread of the airborne disease across various regions of the country. The UK Health Security Agency reports a rise in measles activity earlier this year, primarily due to outbreaks in London, the East of England, and the West Midlands.

Most cases involve unvaccinated children under the age of 10. This marks the first instance of two children succumbing to measles in a single year in England and Wales since 2018. Over the past two weeks, there have been 106 laboratory-confirmed measles cases in England, totaling 736 cases from January 1 to June 8, compared to 959 cases for the entire year of 2025.

Dr. Vanessa Saliba, Consultant Epidemiologist at UKHSA, expressed condolences to the families affected by the tragic loss of their children. Emphasizing the seriousness and potential fatality of measles, she urged all parents to ensure their children are up to date with their MMR or MMRV vaccines for optimal protection.

Measles, a highly contagious disease transmitted through airborne or water droplets, poses severe risks, including death and rare complications like blindness, deafness, and neurological issues. Earlier concerns about low vaccination rates led to unvaccinated children possibly being sent home from school during outbreaks.

The World Health Organization noted the reestablishment of measles in the UK starting from 2024 due to falling vaccine coverage below the 95% threshold required for herd immunity. Vaccination rates in the UK have hit a decade low, with only 91.9% of five-year-olds receiving one dose of MMR and 83.7% receiving both doses in 2024-25.

Health Secretary James Murray stressed the importance of vaccination in preventing measles-related tragedies, highlighting the effectiveness of the MMR vaccine in saving lives. Murray urged parents to ensure their children’s vaccinations are up to date to protect not only their families but also vulnerable members of the community.
