An 11-year-old boy tragically passed away after he entered the River Don in Doncaster and did not resurface, as revealed in an inquest. Mackenzie Swift was last sighted entering the river near Mexborough on May 30, prompting a large-scale search operation that lasted 48 hours.

Worries arose when Mackenzie did not emerge from the water, leading to the recovery of his body on June 2. An initial inquest into his demise commenced at Doncaster Coroner’s Court on Thursday.

During the proceedings, it was disclosed to area coroner Louise Slater that emergency services had been alerted on May 30 regarding a child in distress in the water. Coroner’s officer Siobhan Golightly detailed the events, stating that after the child went into the water, a thorough search and rescue mission was launched by emergency services. Tragically, Mackenzie Swift’s body was found and retrieved on June 2.

The coroner learned that Mackenzie was formally identified by his father. Although the exact cause of death is pending confirmation, a pathologist indicated signs consistent with drowning. The hearing also mentioned that Mackenzie’s family could claim his body for the funeral, with a full inquest scheduled for February 16 next year. Expressing condolences, Ms. Slater said, “I extend my deepest sympathies to Mackenzie’s family during this challenging period.”

In a separate incident, an inquest concerning the demise of a 12-year-old boy who drowned while swimming in a Lancashire river heard how fellow children attempted to rescue him. Known as Junior, his full name was Graham Junior Slater, residing in Leyland, who lost his life while swimming in the River Ribble near Ribchester.

Emergency services were summoned around 2 pm on March 26 as Junior encountered difficulties in the water. Following an extensive search, his body was recovered approximately six hours later.

The inquest into Junior’s passing was initiated at Preston Coroners’ Court on the day of his funeral. Area Coroner Kate Bisset stated that Junior and his friends entered the water, where Junior struggled, prompting all children to try to aid him. Tragically, Junior was found submerged under the water at 7:24 pm.

The court was informed that Junior was born in Preston and resided in Clayton-le-Woods. A final inquest is set for September 18 at Preston Coroners’ Court under Assistant Coroner Richard Taylor.

Junior’s untimely death is part of a distressing trend, with 19 individuals succumbing to water-related incidents during a May heatwave. The Mirror has launched the ‘Save Lives for Sam’ campaign to address the alarming number of drowning incidents in England, urging immediate government action.

Highlighting the severity of the situation, campaigners describe drowning in the UK as an “epidemic” and a “national emergency.” The public is called upon to support efforts to prevent further tragedies as the country grapples with a surge in water-related fatalities during heatwaves.
