The mother of a 19-year-old victim in the Nottingham attacks has requested a meeting with Keir Starmer, alleging that the justice system allowed Valdo Calocane to escape accountability for murder. Emma Webber, Barnaby’s mother, expressed disappointment in the failure of various agencies to prevent Calocane, diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia, from killing three individuals and attempting to harm three others. Calocane, aged 32, is currently detained after admitting manslaughter on grounds of diminished responsibility.
Ms. Webber criticized the mental health services and police for their shortcomings, stating that Calocane was not held accountable for murder despite taking innocent lives and that the decision to accept a manslaughter plea deprived the victims and their families of justice. She highlighted evidence suggesting that Calocane’s history, background, and behavior should have been thoroughly examined, emphasizing his awareness of his actions despite his mental illness.
Urging for a meeting with government officials within the upcoming month, Ms. Webber emphasized the importance of not allowing a triple killer to evade responsibility through legal technicalities. She called for discussions with key figures including the Prime Minister, Attorney General, Home Secretary, Health Secretary, and Justice Minister. While the inquiry’s results are expected in the spring of next year, she stressed the need for immediate action.
