A 19-year-old young man tragically lost his life in a drowning incident at a lake in Nottinghamshire while spending time with friends. The distressing video of the incident quickly spread on social media platforms. Identified as Panashe Muchenje, he was at Balderton Lake near Newark with two companions during the recent heatwave on May 28 when the incident occurred.
The video footage shows Muchenje entering the lake and encountering difficulties, leading to his drowning. The footage has been widely shared by Zimbabwean news sources, prompting his family to appeal to major tech companies to remove the video.
Following the incident, The Mirror initiated the ‘Save Lives for Sam’ campaign to address the alarming rate of child drownings in England. Muchenje’s family has requested respect and privacy, urging people to refrain from speculating on his death, which has been ruled non-suspicious by the police.
After spending approximately 22 minutes in the water, Muchenje was rescued and attended to by paramedics before being taken to the hospital, where he eventually succumbed to the events of that day. Nottinghamshire County Councillor Johno Lee expressed shock and dismay over the circulation of the footage on social media platforms.
Nottinghamshire Police confirmed that no formal investigation is ongoing, and preparations are being made for the coroner’s report. The community has been urged to provide support to those affected by the tragedy. The focus is on honoring Muchenje’s memory, supporting his family, and promptly removing any distressing content associated with the incident from online platforms.
