A man who previously saved a police officer’s life right before winning a £1 million prize in the EuroMillions has tragically passed away in a possible hit-and-run incident while cycling.
Anthony Canty, aged 39, administered CPR to a policeman who suffered a heart attack on a bus in April 2020. Shortly after this heroic act, Anthony became a millionaire by winning £1 million in the EuroMillions.
Following his life-changing win, the police officer, who had been airlifted to the hospital and spent five days in intensive care but eventually recovered, expressed to Anthony that “good karma happens to good people.”
However, six years after his lottery win, Anthony met with a fatal accident while cycling in Tiptree, Essex, at 6:30 am on May 21. Despite being rushed to the hospital, he passed away four days later.
An 18-year-old individual was arrested initially on suspicion of causing severe injury due to dangerous driving, driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, and failing to stop at the scene. The police mentioned that the suspect remains under investigation as inquiries progress.
Tributes for Anthony, described as a “true gentleman,” flooded social media. Lynne Beckham-Briggs, the sister of David Beckham, mourned his loss on Facebook, stating, “Another good one taken too soon! Anthony Canty, you will be truly missed! Such a lovely man.”
Friends and acquaintances also shared their grief, with Gary Hill expressing disbelief and fond memories of Anthony, while Sophie Shane and Kirsty Morton highlighted his positive impact on everyone he encountered.
Anthony, survived by his wife Katie and their two daughters, won the £1 million EuroMillions prize on May 5, 2020. He initially thought he had won £100,000 until his wife confirmed they were actually millionaires.
Despite his newfound wealth, Anthony planned to buy a new house and take his daughters to Disneyland. He intended to continue working and was employed at a local building materials supplier at the time of his passing.
Essex Police urged witnesses to provide any details about the fatal collision. They specifically appealed for information regarding a black Ford KA seen in the area around the time of the incident on the morning of May 21.
Anyone with relevant information or footage was encouraged to contact the authorities, quoting reference number 174 dated May 21.
