An individual wrongfully imprisoned for 17 years for a rape he did not commit expressed his dismay after the actual perpetrator received a lighter sentence. Paul Quinn, aged 52, was sentenced to 24 years for a brutal assault on a young mother in July 2003. The wrongly convicted Andrew Malkinson was only exonerated in 2023 after a prolonged legal battle.

Malkinson denounced Quinn as a “despicable man” who caused immense suffering to both the victim and himself. Malkinson voiced his disappointment, stating, “I am offended that this violent and depraved individual, who callously allowed me to endure over 17 years of wrongful imprisonment for his crime, has been given a milder punishment than I, an innocent man.”

Having served more than 17 years in prison, Malkinson expressed his hope that Quinn, with a history of violence and sexual offenses, would not be granted parole and would serve a longer sentence than him. He emphasized the importance of true justice for all parties involved, particularly the victim who suffered greatly due to the crime.

Following Quinn’s sentencing at Manchester Crown Court, Malkinson’s attorney, Toby Wilton of Hickman & Rose, highlighted the ongoing battle to reform the compensation system for victims of miscarriages of justice, ensuring they receive fair and adequate compensation without incurring additional costs.

Quinn’s victim, hailed as a hero in court, reflected on the impact of the incident on her life, emphasizing the lasting trauma and fear she experiences daily. The victim expressed gratitude for finally achieving justice after two decades but acknowledged the profound effects the ordeal had on both her and Malkinson.

The Greater Manchester Police urged any other potential victims of Quinn to come forward, emphasizing the importance of seeking justice for all affected individuals. Detectives underscored the necessity of addressing potential further offenses by Quinn and encouraged anyone with relevant information to cooperate with the investigation.

The court proceedings revealed the horrific details of Quinn’s assault on the mother-of-two, underscoring the severity of his actions and the lasting impact on the victim. The judge praised the victim’s courage and resilience during the trial, acknowledging her as the hero of the case.

In light of the revelations and ongoing investigations, questions have been raised about the handling of the case and the delayed identification of the true perpetrator. The focus has shifted towards ensuring justice for all parties involved and preventing similar miscarriages of justice in the future.
