HSBC clients are facing significant delays in transferring their ISA savings due to a surge in demand following the bank’s introduction of a new switching incentive. The bank offered cashback incentives of up to £500 to customers who deposited certain amounts into an ISA. Despite the promised rewards, some customers are experiencing delays in accessing their funds, with one individual reporting a wait of over a month for a transfer of £70,500 initiated on April 8.

The standard transfer timeline for cash ISAs is 15 working days, while other types of transfers, like stocks and shares ISAs, may take up to 30 calendar days. Unhappy customers have taken to social media to express their frustrations with the prolonged process.

HSBC has acknowledged the backlog of ISAs awaiting processing and assured customers that their funds are secure and any missed interest will be compensated. Once the transfers are completed, customers will still receive the cashback bonuses as promised.

An HSBC UK spokesperson attributed the delays to an unexpectedly high volume of ISA transfers driven by the popularity of the bank’s savings products. They reassured customers that interest will continue to accrue during the transfer period and advised against taking any immediate action.

ISAs are tax-free savings accounts, offering a way to earn interest without incurring tax liabilities. Different types of ISAs cater to various savings needs, such as cash ISAs, stocks and shares ISAs, Lifetime ISAs, and innovative finance ISAs. Each tax year, individuals can save up to £20,000 across their ISA accounts, with specific limits applying to certain types of ISAs, like the £4,000 annual cap on Lifetime ISAs.
