Which? regularly monitors the prices of numerous grocery items at major supermarkets throughout the year using an independent price comparison website. The consumer advocacy organization calculates the average price of each item across the month for each store to determine their overall average prices.
The shopping list includes a mix of branded and own-brand products such as Cathedral City, Birds Eye, and Hovis. The analysis considers special offer prices and loyalty discounts where applicable, excluding multi-buy offers. Which? maintains confidentiality by not disclosing the full list of products to retailers.
The latest pricing analysis highlights the potential for shoppers to save money on groceries based on where they choose to shop. Reena Sewraz, Which? Retail Editor, emphasized the importance of consistently low prices without complex loyalty programs. Aldi and Lidl stand out for their everyday value, offering significant savings compared to other supermarkets.
Sewraz noted that making the right supermarket choice can lead to substantial savings, up to 40%, on essential items. As consumer shopping habits evolve, Aldi and Lidl continue to thrive due to their competitive pricing strategies, resonating with shoppers seeking value and affordability.
