Armed police were deployed to Teignmouth, a coastal town, over the past weekend in response to reports of threats involving a firearm. Concerns arose after individuals on social media mentioned seeing a person carrying a gun near Back Beach on Saturday night, causing unease among locals and prompting a swift reaction from Devon and Cornwall Police.
Authorities were alerted at 8:55 pm following an assault report in Queen Street near the town center. Devon and Cornwall Police seized a “non-viable firearm” at the scene, although specific details were not disclosed. A man in his 60s was apprehended by a police armed response unit on suspicion of GBH with intent, affray, and possession of an imitation firearm. Subsequently, he was released on police bail. The victim of the assault sustained a facial injury, as confirmed by the police.
Eyewitnesses observed a significant police presence near the Ship Inn pub on Queen Street, where the road was temporarily closed. A spokesperson for Devon and Cornwall Police stated that the incident involved an assault report at 8:55 pm on Saturday, May 30 in Queen Street, Teignmouth. The spokesperson added that armed officers intervened, arresting a man in his 60s on suspicion of GBH with intent, affray, and possession of an imitation firearm. The arrested individual was later released on police bail, while the victim with facial injuries was attended to. Additionally, a non-viable firearm was recovered from the scene.
