Former England footballer Kevin Keegan is planning a return to Newcastle United to bid farewell to the fans after being diagnosed with stage four cancer. Keegan, also known as King Kev, received a warm reception in Tyneside when he shared his battle with the disease. He mentioned a top doctor’s new treatment approach for his advanced cancer, joking that as a Liverpool supporter, he knew he wouldn’t be walking alone.

Earlier this year, Keegan’s family disclosed his cancer diagnosis, and despite facing a challenging period, he made an appearance in Newcastle, a city he holds dear and where he commands a massive following. Speaking at the Tyne Theatre and Opera House, Keegan openly discussed his stage four cancer diagnosis, signifying the disease’s advanced spread.

Reflecting on his journey, Keegan recounted being involved in a car accident that led to surgery. He shared a conversation with his doctor regarding the treatment’s success rate, highlighting the doctor’s 33% statistic, which he found unexpectedly low. Despite the odds, Keegan expressed gratitude for still being present.

Throughout his illustrious career, Keegan played for clubs like Scunthorpe United, Liverpool, Hamburg, Southampton, and Newcastle. He later transitioned to management roles at Newcastle, Fulham, England, and Manchester City. Keegan expressed his desire to bid farewell to Newcastle United, a place he hasn’t visited since a legal battle in 2009.

Although hesitant about having a statue dedicated to him at the stadium, Keegan stated that he prefers the heartfelt reception from supporters. Newcastle United extended their heartfelt support to Keegan and his family, emphasizing his significant impact on the club and its fans. They expressed admiration for Keegan’s leadership and passion, assuring him of a warm welcome at St James’ Park.

Recognized as one of England’s football legends, Keegan’s career boasts three League titles, two UEFA Cups, and an FA Cup win. He was twice crowned European Footballer of the Year, underlining his exceptional contributions to the sport.
