Two prominent American commentators known for expressing strong anti-Israel sentiments have been prohibited from entering the United Kingdom.

Cenk Uygur, the host of the online talk show Young Turks, and his nephew Hasan Piker, a streamer, were both denied entry to the UK to participate in SXSW London. Uygur also stated that he was barred from speaking at an event at Oxford University.

Piker has previously faced criticism for his statement in 2019 that America “deserved 9/11,” which he later apologized for. He has also made controversial remarks favoring Hamas over Israel, clarifying that his stance is anti-Israel rather than antisemitic.

Their electronic travel authorizations (ETAs) were revoked following a decision by Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood, who deemed their presence in the UK not in the public interest. This action mirrors the government’s response to Kanye West earlier this year after he made anti-semitic comments.

The rationale behind the ban is reportedly linked to concerns that their presence could fuel antisemitism. Uygur expressed his dismay online, questioning the limitations on freedom of expression. Meanwhile, Piker accused Israel of influencing the UK’s decision, labeling it as a betrayal of liberal values.

The Community Security Trust, a Jewish organization, urged SXSW to act responsibly and avoid providing a platform for Piker, citing his promotion of anti-semitic rhetoric and support for extremist groups.

Labour MP David Taylor welcomed the decision to bar Piker, emphasizing the importance of not tolerating hate speech and supporting proscribed terror groups. The President of the Oxford Union defended the principle of free speech and vowed to ensure that the discussion proceeds, even considering hosting it online.

The Home Office clarified that the cancellation of the ETAs was based on the potential risk these individuals may pose to UK society. Additionally, the government blocked eleven foreign nationals described as “far-right agitators” from entering the UK for a recent rally in London.

Green Party leader Zack Polanski criticized the decision, suggesting it reflects a dangerous trend under the current government. He expressed concerns about potential suppression of criticism against the Israeli government.

In response, SXSW London emphasized its commitment to fostering diverse voices and perspectives, highlighting the importance of open dialogue and exchange of ideas.

These developments underscore the ongoing debate surrounding freedom of expression, hate speech, and government intervention in public discourse.
