A Virgin Atlantic flight destined for Jamaica had to change course over the Atlantic Ocean and divert to Ireland due to an unexpected engine failure mid-flight. Departing from London Heathrow at 4:12 pm on Saturday, Flight VS165 experienced engine trouble nearly three hours into the journey over the North Atlantic.
The aircraft, carrying 246 passengers and 13 crew members en route to Sangster International Airport in Montego Bay, Jamaica, swiftly turned back towards Europe upon encountering the engine issue to prevent further complications. Operating with reduced performance, the plane descended from 34,000 feet to a safer single-engine cruising altitude of 20,000 feet as it headed back to Ireland.
Air traffic controllers directed the flight to Shannon Airport on the west coast of Ireland, a crucial emergency diversion point for transatlantic journeys. Emergency protocols were activated on the ground, with Shannon Airport’s emergency services preparing for the plane’s arrival.
Upon landing safely at Shannon Airport’s Runway at 9:24 pm IST, emergency vehicles closely monitored the aircraft’s progress. Following inspections confirming no active fire, the plane was guided to its parking stand without incident. All passengers and crew disembarked without injuries, and Virgin Atlantic arranged for them to board a replacement flight to Jamaica.
Investigations are ongoing to determine the cause of the engine failure.
