Rugby league icon John Kear, aged 71, passed away recently. The former player turned coach had a distinguished career with various teams including England, Sheffield, Hull, Wakefield, Batley, Bradford, and Widnes. Kear had provided commentary for the BBC during the Challenge Cup final on Saturday but tragically died the following day.

Kear’s involvement in rugby league spanned over decades, starting as a player at Castleford before transitioning to coaching at Bramley in 1992. He later moved to PSG and then to Sheffield Eagles, where he achieved notable success by leading the team to a surprising victory over Wigan in the Challenge Cup final of 1998.

Throughout his coaching tenure, Kear worked with several clubs, including Hull FC, Wakefield, Batley, Bradford, and Widnes. He also had the opportunity to coach the England national team during the Rugby League World Cup in 2000, guiding them to the semi-finals.

The Rugby Football League (RFL) paid tribute to Kear, acknowledging his sudden passing after his involvement in the BBC’s coverage of the Challenge Cup finals. Kear was well-respected and admired in the rugby league community for his coaching achievements, particularly the two memorable Challenge Cup final victories he orchestrated.

Kear’s impact extended beyond coaching, as he also served as a broadcaster for the BBC, notably covering the Challenge Cup. His former clubs, Wakefield and Hull FC, expressed their deep sadness at his passing and extended condolences to his family and friends.

John Kear’s legacy in rugby league is marked by his dedication, success, and contributions to the sport both on and off the field.
