Weight loss injections are being administered to military personnel who have struggled with weight gain. Last year, 240 soldiers received the Mounjaro and Wegovy jabs to aid in shedding excess fat, a significant increase from the 73 individuals who received these injections in 2024.

The recipients of the injections in the previous year included 128 army members, 58 from the RAF, and 54 from the Navy. Among them, 46 were officers, while the rest were enlisted personnel.

According to data from the Ministry of Defence, a considerable number of military personnel fail their annual fitness assessments. Some individuals have faced dismissal due to obesity, with a few exceeding 26 stone in weight.

There have been instances in the army where soldiers have waist measurements exceeding 55 inches, with a few individuals granted access to liposuction treatment for weight management.

Official records indicate that over 11,000 soldiers, 4,300 sailors, and 3,900 aircrew members are classified as obese based on their Body Mass Index (BMI). However, the military acknowledges that BMI might not always accurately reflect an individual’s body composition, particularly in cases where individuals have higher muscle mass.

Medical records reveal that nearly 6,000 military personnel were prescribed anti-depressants, and 2,500 were given sleeping aids last year. Additionally, 872 individuals received prescriptions for Viagra or similar medications, with the majority being army personnel.

Former British Military Intelligence Colonel, Philip Ingram, commended the military for utilizing various medical interventions to improve the fitness of service members, emphasizing the importance of retaining experienced personnel.

A Ministry of Defence spokesperson stated that while only a small percentage of the Armed Forces are affected by obesity, comprehensive support is provided for those identified, including lifestyle and dietary assistance, fitness initiatives, and weight loss interventions on a case-by-case basis.

Safety remains a top priority in the armed forces, with thorough medical assessments required before considering any medication for personnel.
