A surge in sales within Britain’s staycation industry has been attributed to the ongoing heatwave. The exceptionally high temperatures have led to an influx of day-trippers to popular tourist destinations, coupled with a noticeable increase in overnight stays. This trend coincided with the recent bank holiday weekend and school half term holidays nationwide.

Awaze, recognized as Europe’s largest holiday rentals provider, has observed a significant spike in last-minute bookings for coastal getaways within Britain. Specifically, bookings through its Cottages.com division for coastal destinations in north-west England have surged by 50% in the past week, while reservations for Hoseasons seaside properties have soared by 62% compared to the previous year.

Popular destinations such as Whitby, Bridlington, and Filey have seen a notable uptick in bookings through Cottages.com, whereas Hoseasons has experienced heightened interest in locations like Great Yarmouth, Bude, and Weston-Super-Mare.

In addition to the heatwave, Awaze attributes the surge in demand to a reluctance to travel abroad, possibly due to cost concerns or the potential for long queues at passport control. Matthew Price, the CEO, noted a significant increase in last-minute coastal bookings as individuals sought relief from the heat through coastal retreats.

Julie Dalton, the managing director at Gulliver’s Theme Parks and Resorts, acknowledged that the scorching temperatures deterred some visitors initially. Despite a challenging start to the year, the company is now witnessing positive signs of recovery, boosted by the favorable weather conditions. However, she highlighted a shift in customer behavior towards more budget-conscious activities, such as picnics, which the family-owned business actively encourages.

Furthermore, the tourism industry is poised to receive additional support following Chancellor Rachel Reeves’ announcement to reduce ticket prices for fairs, theme parks, and zoos this summer. The Chancellor’s initiative, part of the “Great British Summer Savings” scheme, includes slashing VAT on summer attractions from 20% to 5% and extending the discount to children’s meals at restaurants.

Ms. Dalton remains cautiously optimistic about the impact of these measures, emphasizing that it is too early to predict their full effects.
