Nearly a dozen primary schools in Ireland had to shut down today following a threatening email that hinted at a potential mass shooting. Over 10 schools in County Carlow took the precautionary measure in response to the received email, which authorities suspect might be a hoax.

Among the affected schools were St Fiacc’s NS, Ballyconnell NS, Scoil Mhuire gan Smál, St Laserian’s NS, Rathvilly Primary School, Scoil Molaise in Old Leighlin, Scoil Mhuire Lourdes, Rathmore NS, Drumphea School, and St Columba’s. St Joseph’s National School was also closed due to the threat, as confirmed by headteacher and local councillor Fergal Browne in an interview with KCLR radio station.

Browne detailed that the email, originating from a Gmail account, was sent to multiple schools in Carlow, with some recipients having incorrect email addresses. He expressed belief that the email, mentioning a potential school shooting, was likely a hoax. Authorities, including the police, have been coordinating with the schools to address the situation and ensure safety measures are in place.

The incident has prompted an increased police presence in the area, causing concern among parents. Browne reassured parents that schools are secure environments with established safety protocols. He emphasized the importance of learning from such events to enhance future responses to threats.

School officials plan to convene later to assess the situation further and discuss strategies for handling similar threats going forward.
