Holidaymakers planning a trip to Italy have been cautioned to prepare for significant disturbances due to a nationwide transport strike that is set to cause chaos across the country. The 24-hour strike is scheduled to impact various modes of transportation including rail services, airports, metro systems, buses, and regional transport networks starting from 9 pm on Thursday, May 28, until 9 pm on Friday, May 29.
Multiple labor unions have announced industrial action involving major rail operators such as Trenitalia, Trenord, and Italo, raising concerns about potential cancellations and delays on key routes connecting major cities like Rome, Milan, Venice, Florence, Bologna, and Naples. These disruptions are expected to be most severe outside the protected operating hours.
Italy’s Ministry of Transport has released lists of essential services that must continue operating during designated commuter times between 6 am and 9 am, and then from 6 pm to 9 pm. The country’s Civil Aviation Authority, ENAC, has assured that flights are safeguarded during specific operating hours from 7 am to 10 am and 6 pm to 9 pm.
ENAC has advised passengers to contact airlines directly for the latest flight updates. Additionally, travel experts have warned that the strike may lead to broader disruptions across European airline networks due to changes in aircraft schedules and increased demand for rebooking.
Key travel hubs like Rome Fiumicino Airport, Milan Malpensa Airport, Venice Marco Polo Airport, and Naples International Airport are anticipated to experience delays, congestion, and potential schedule modifications during the strike.
Local transport services including airport transfers, metro systems, buses, and regional rail networks may operate at reduced capacity or face temporary shutdowns based on local participation levels. Tourists visiting popular sites like the Colosseum, Vatican City, Venice’s canals, and Florence’s historic center could encounter delays due to disruptions in local transportation.
Travel advisors recommend passengers to stay updated on airline notifications and rail service updates as schedules may change rapidly during the strike. While easyJet intends to maintain normal flight operations, they advise customers to allocate extra time for airport travel.
An easyJet spokesperson stated, “We are committed to minimizing any disruptions caused by the national strike in Italy. While our schedule remains unchanged, we recommend that travelers allow extra time for airport processes. In case of any flight disruptions, affected customers will be contacted directly to rearrange their plans, and we apologize for any inconvenience caused.”
Italy continues to be a favored tourist destination for British travelers, attracting millions of visitors from the UK annually, particularly during the spring and summer seasons.
