Keir Starmer is at a pivotal moment as he contemplates a crucial decision on whether to prohibit children from accessing social media, a move urged by a grieving mother. The Prime Minister has pledged swift action as a consultation on enhancing platform safety for young users concluded. Increasing voices are advocating for platforms like Snapchat, Instagram, and X to be off-limits to those under 16, inspired by Australia’s similar regulation.

Former Health Secretary Wes Streeting recently joined the chorus calling for a ban, echoing medical professionals who liken the impact of excessive screen time and social media on children to that of smoking. Advocates for the ban argue it is the most effective way to shield children from harmful content. Ellen Roome, whose 14-year-old son Jools Sweeney tragically died while engaging in an online challenge, emphasized the need for immediate action to address social media-related risks.

During a meeting with families affected by social media-related tragedies, Starmer expressed his commitment to taking decisive steps to address the issue promptly. The Prime Minister also emphasized the necessity of a transformative approach to the problem and assured a swift response, leveraging powers granted earlier this year for quick intervention.

In response to criticisms of slow progress, Streeting likened social media to tobacco, emphasizing the urgent need to prioritize children’s well-being and reclaim their innocence. Pressure is mounting on the government to implement a ban on underage social media usage, with calls for additional measures such as time restrictions, ending autoplay features, and curfews for minors.

The Academy of Medical Royal Colleges highlighted the detrimental impact of screen time and social media on young people’s health, aligning it with well-recognized health risks like smoking. While MPs recently voted against an immediate ban on social media for under-16s, the government intends to review consultation outcomes and is committed to enforcing age or functionality restrictions in the near future.
