Nicola Sturgeon expressed deep shock following her estranged husband’s admission to embezzling over £400,000 from the SNP to support his extravagant lifestyle. Peter Murrell, the former chief executive of the party, confessed to misusing party funds for luxury purchases, including a high-priced motorhome, watches, fountain pens, and other items.
Records revealed that Murrell fabricated an invoice to purchase a luxury car, which he later sold for a lower amount, using the excess cash for personal expenses. He also used party funds for more modest purchases like hand cream, household items, and a toilet seat.
Murrell’s legal troubles began in April 2023 when he was arrested as part of a police inquiry into the SNP’s finances. He was formally charged in April 2024 and has now been remanded in custody pending sentencing in June.
Sturgeon, who was married to Murrell for 15 years, expressed her distress over the betrayal, emphasizing that she had no knowledge of his actions. She clarified that she was completely cleared of any wrongdoing after an investigation.
The scandal has caused a significant upheaval within the SNP, with party leader John Swinney issuing a public apology to members for the breach of trust. The court proceedings revealed the extent of Murrell’s embezzlement over a 12-year period and the elaborate measures he took to conceal his illicit activities.
