A shocking theory has resurfaced suggesting that England’s legendary goalkeeper, Gordon Banks, may have been intentionally poisoned by the CIA during the 1970 World Cup in Mexico. Banks fell ill just before England’s crucial quarter-final match against West Germany, leading to his absence from the game, which many believed contributed to England’s defeat. Initially attributing his illness to a tainted bottle of beer, Banks’ grandson approached a former BBC reporter, Gabriel Gatehouse, to investigate the possibility of CIA involvement in the poisoning incident.

After an extensive three-year inquiry spanning from Stoke-on-Trent to Mexico and reviewing declassified government documents, Gatehouse uncovered compelling evidence supporting the poisoning theory. The investigation revealed information from a senior US senator who had received confidential briefings from the CIA, hinting at the agency’s potential role in the sabotage. Notably, football writer Brian Glanville’s 2007 book also suggested foul play, indicating that Banks might have been a victim of deliberate tampering.

Further fueling the suspicion, a football journalist, Bob Oxby, shared a conversation where his cousin, US Senator Stuart Symington, allegedly implied CIA involvement in Banks’ illness to prevent England from defeating Brazil. The motive behind the alleged poisoning was linked to geopolitical tensions during the Cold War era, with the CIA purportedly favoring Brazil’s success for strategic reasons.

Although skepticism surrounds the plausibility of such a conspiracy, a classified CIA document from 1971 acknowledged the political significance of the World Cup in bolstering regimes, shedding light on the agency’s awareness of the tournament’s influence. Despite conflicting opinions, Neil Phillips, the team doctor, dismissed the poisoning theory, attributing Banks’ sickness to common sources like food contamination.

The mysterious circumstances surrounding Banks’ illness continue to intrigue historians and football enthusiasts, with conflicting accounts and unresolved questions lingering over the controversial incident. Banks, a revered figure in English football and a Stoke City icon, tragically passed away in February 2019 at the age of 81, leaving behind a legacy intertwined with this puzzling chapter in World Cup history.
