Dozens of individuals have been harmed or killed in a suspected suicide bombing incident that targeted a train transporting Pakistani security personnel and their relatives. The explosion resulted in the deaths of at least 24 people and left 70 others injured in Balochistan, a province in southwest Pakistan, as per officials. This attack, claimed by separatist militants, is part of a series of assaults on trains, security forces, and infrastructure in Balochistan, which shares borders with Iran and Afghanistan. The Baloch Liberation Army (BLA), a separatist militant group, has claimed responsibility for the attack, labeling it as a suicide bombing, although this assertion has not been independently confirmed.

The incident occurred when a shuttle train carrying passengers from Quetta’s cantonment area was connecting with the Jaffar Express long-distance train. The blast occurred near a railway track in the provincial capital, causing the engine and three coaches to derail, with two coaches overturning. The railways ministry stated that security forces had secured the area, and rescue operations were ongoing.

According to a security official, an explosives-laden vehicle struck one of the train’s carriages in a residential locality, resulting in casualties among residents of a nearby apartment building. Images from the scene depicted burnt vehicles, damaged buildings, twisted metal, and debris strewn near the railway track, with smoke billowing from the wreckage.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif denounced the incident as a “heinous bomb explosion” on social media platform X, extending sympathies to the bereaved families and affirming the nation’s solidarity with Balochistan. In a separate incident in March 2025, BLA militants commandeered the Jaffar Express train, holding numerous hostages until a military intervention concluded the standoff after a day, resulting in casualties on both sides. Earlier this year, Pakistani forces conducted a 40-hour operation that led to the elimination of 145 militants following coordinated attacks in Balochistan that claimed nearly 50 lives, according to provincial authorities.
